Taxi 2 (2000)

Taxi 2 (also called Taxi Taxi) is a French film directed by Gérard Krawczyk and released in 2000. It is a sequel to Taxi written by Luc Besson and directed by Gérard Pirès in 1998. It was followed by Taxi 3 in 2003.

Taxi 2 tells the story of a Japanese minister of defence visiting Marseille to view the city police's anti-gang tactics. During the visit, however, he is kidnapped by a group working for the Japanese yakuza. Young officer Emilien (played by Frédéric Diefenthal) is determined to rescue the minister and officer Petra (Emma Sjöberg) (his girlfriend), who was also kidnapped, and restore the honour of his department. Once again, speed demon taxi-driver Daniel (Samy Naceri) is called upon to save the day with his high-speed driving skills.

The Gift (2000)

The Gift is a 2000 American film directed by Sam Raimi, written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson and based on the alleged psychic experiences of Thornton's mother.

It is a supernatural thriller, with the main character Annie (Cate Blanchett) becoming involved in a murder mystery as a result of her witnessing the crime with her second sight. Other major characters are played by Keanu Reeves, Giovanni Ribisi, Hilary Swank, Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear.

The film is set in the fictional southern town of Brixton, Georgia, where young widow Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett), the mother of three young boys, is the resident "fortune-teller." The town is abuzz with the disappearance of Jessica King (Katie Holmes), the fiancée of Wayne Collins (Greg Kinnear), the school's principal.

As the search for Jessica begins, the local police and Jessica's father Kenneth King (Chelcie Ross) enlist Annie's help to see if she can come up with a possible answer. Annie is unable to produce a vision, largely due to the presence of Pearl Johnson (J.K. Simmons), the local sheriff who looks upon Annie's trade unfavorably.

Annie later receives a vision that Jessica has been killed and her body weighed down by a chain and thrown into a pond. She also sees a fiddle player in the vision, white lilies and a split-rail fence. She returns to Johnson with her findings, and with the information, Johnson decides to search a pond at the home of Donnie Barksdale (Keanu Reeves), a violent alcoholic. Barksdale's battered wife, Valerie (Hilary Swank), gives her permission for the search as Donnie is away fishing. Donnie returns while the search is proceeding. As the police are ready to give up on the search they find the nude and chained body of Jessica King. Donnie is immediately arrested.

During his trial for Jessica's murder, it is revealed that Jessica and Barksdale had an affair, and Jessica's reputation for promiscuity is exposed in open court. The case against Barksdale is strengthened when a scratch on his forearm is proven to have been perpetrated by Jessica during a confrontation at a local bar. Annie also takes the stand, and though her psychic testimony is ridiculed by defense attorney Gerald Weems (Michael Jeter), Donnie is eventually convicted and sent to prison.

A subplot reveals other examples of Annie's "gift". Buddy Cole (Giovanni Ribisi) harbors an intense hatred for his father, and consistently has fits of seemingly unprovoked rage, including incidents with Annie and with Donnie Barksdale. Buddy tries to explain to Annie why he hates his father but Annie is preoccupied and doesn't want to listen to the panicky and vulgar Buddy. He asks "If I look into a blue diamond, will I die?" but doesn't elaborate. Unable to understand the question, Annie shrugs Buddy off. Soon after, Buddy's hysterical mother calls Annie to come to the house as Buddy has snapped and has his father bound to a chair. Buddy sets fire to his father, and as Annie tries to stop him, he shows her a blue diamond tattoo on his father's navel. It is revealed that Buddy's father took advantage of his son's fragile mental state to force him into fellatio. An ambulance takes Buddy's father away, while Buddy is taken to a mental hospital.

Later, Annie receives another vision saying that Donnie is innocent. She asks District Attorney David Duncan (Gary Cole) to reopen the case. Duncan refuses, but Annie counters that she will reveal Duncan's own involvement with Jessica King, as Annie had caught them making out in the women's toilet while at a local dance. Duncan offers her money to keep quiet, but Annie refuses, still wanting justice for Barksdale.

Annie tells Principal Collins that Barksdale is not responsible for his fiancée's death and that DA Duncan will not reopen the investigation. After driving out to the pond that night with Collins, Annie realizes that Collins is the murderer. He confesses to Annie that he was angry after he discovered that she was cheating on him. Collins attempts to kill Annie, knowing that she'll go to the police. Just as he is about to land a fatal blow with a steel flashlight, Buddy Cole shows up and knocks Collins out.

Sitting in the car at the pond, Buddy, uncharacteristically calm, returns a handkerchief that Annie had lent him earlier, and tells her that she is the heart and soul of the town and for her not to stop doing what she's doing. The two drive to the police station with Collins stowed in the trunk. Annie tells Buddy that he will have to return to the mental hospital, and he waits in the car while she goes inside to talk with Sheriff Johnson. When Annie explains to Johnson what happened at the pond, he informs her that Buddy Cole hanged himself at the mental hospital earlier that day. She returns to her car to find Buddy gone. However, Annie still has her handkerchief that Buddy returned to her.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

The Perfect Storm is a 2000 dramatic disaster film directed by Wolfgang Petersen. It is an adaptation of the 1997 non-fiction book of the same title by Sebastian Junger about the crew of the Andrea Gail that got caught in the Perfect Storm of 1991. The film stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, William Fichtner, John C. Reilly, Allen Payne, John Hawkes, Diane Lane, Michael Ironside, Karen Allen and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.[2] The film was released on June 30, 2000 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

In October 1991, the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail returns to port in Gloucester, Massachusetts with a poor catch. Desperate for money, Captain Billy Tyne (Clooney), convinces the Andrea Gail crew to join him for one more late season fishing expedition. They head out past their usual fishing grounds, leaving a developing thunderstorm behind them. Initially unsuccessful, they head to the Flemish Cap, where their luck improves. At the height of their fishing the ice machine breaks; the only way to sell their catch before it spoils is to hurry back to shore. After debating whether to sail through the building storm or to wait it out, the crew decide to risk the storm. However, between the Andrea Gail and Gloucester is a confluence of two powerful weather fronts and a hurricane, which the Andrea Gail crew underestimate.

After repeated warnings from other ships, the Andrea Gail loses her antenna, forcing a fellow ship to call in a Mayday. An Air National Guard rescue helicopter responds, but after failing to perform a midair refuel, the helicopter crew ditch the aircraft before it crashes, and all but one of the crew members are rescued by a Coast Guard vessel, the Tamaroa. The Andrea Gail endures various problems: with 40-foot (12 m) waves crashing onto the deck, a broken stabilizer ramming the side of the ship, and two men thrown overboard. The crew decide to turn around to avoid further damage by the storm. After doing so, the vessel encounters an enormous rogue wave. Billy tells Bobby to apply full power to ride over the wave; it seems that they may make it over, but the wave starts to plunder and the boat flips over. Billy elects to go down with his ship and only Bobby manages to surface. There are no survivors, however, and the film ends with Captain Greenlaw reading the eulogy at the memorial service, followed by Christina and Bobby's mom, Ethel, consoling each other on the dock and Billy's voice pontificating about what it means to be a swordboat captain.

Almost Famous (2000)

Almost Famous is a 2000 musical comedy-drama film written and directed by Cameron Crowe and telling the fictional story of a teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone magazine while covering the fictitious rock band Stillwater (named for an eponymous actual band), and his efforts to get his first cover story published. The film is semi-autobiographical, as Crowe himself was a teenage writer for Rolling Stone.

The film is based on Crowe's experiences touring with rock bands Poco, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the real Stillwater. In a Rolling Stone article, he talks about how he lost his virginity, fell in love, and met his heroes, experiences that are shared by William, the main character in the film.

Despite failing to break even, the film received positive reviews and received four Oscar nominations, one of which led to an award to Crowe for his screenplay. It was also awarded the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. Roger Ebert hailed it the best film of the year. It also won two Golden Globes, for Best Picture and Kate Hudson won Best Supporting Actress.

In 1973, William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is a 15-year-old aspiring rock journalist. His protective mother, Elaine (Frances McDormand), wants him to become a lawyer. Shunned by his classmates, he writes for underground papers, sharing the love of rock music instilled in him through a gift of albums left behind by his sister, Anita (Zooey Deschanel), when she leaves home in disgust over Elaine's beliefs.

William listens to an interview with rock journalist Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman). William has sent Bangs copies of his work, and Bangs gives William a $35 assignment to review a Black Sabbath concert which he considers his big break. Bangs advises William to be "honest and unmerciful," but fails to mention how to get into the show or meet the band. Without credentials, William cannot get into the San Diego Sports Arena. He meets a group of semi-groupies who call themselves "Band-Aids": Estrella Starr (Bijou Phillips), Polexia Aphrodisia (Anna Paquin), Sapphire (Fairuza Balk) and their leader, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) whom he starts a conversation with. The Band-Aids get into the show but William is still barred from entry as the opening band, Stillwater, arrives. Initially reluctant to assist a journalist, they bring William backstage after he critiques Stillwater's work. The guitarist, Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup), takes a liking to William.

William is driven from San Diego to Hollywood by Penny to the "Riot House", the Hollywood Hyatt Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, to meet Stillwater. Penny serves as William's chauffeur, but only to get close to Russell, for whom she has genuine feelings and shares a past relationship. William is called by Ben Fong-Torres (Terry Chen), editor of Rolling Stone, who wants him to do a story for their magazine. Ben believes William is several years older than he really is, and William convinces Ben to let him go on the road with Stillwater to get a story. To this end, William rides with Stillwater and the Band-Aids aboard "Doris", the band's bus, promising to keep in contact with his mother. William desires to interview each member of Stillwater separately. However, William finds Russell's evasion of interviews increasingly frustrating. Russell receives an electric shock onstage in Phoenix, which infuriates their manager, Dick Roswell (Noah Taylor), causing them to abandon the show. In Topeka, Kansas, a t-shirt showing Russell in focus with the rest of the band out of focus sparks an argument between lead singer Jeff (Jason Lee) and Russell. Russell and William leave, going to a teenage house party so Russell can be with people who are "real". Tripping on LSD, Russell climbs onto the roof, screaming "I am a golden god!" and instructing William to write that his last words were "I'm on drugs!" before jumping into the pool. William calls Dick to make Russell to board the bus the morning after. In the following rest of the tour, William forms a strong bond with Penny and at one point loses his virginity to one of the Band-Aids.

A new manager, Dennis (Jimmy Fallon), comes on board, and it is revealed that Penny must leave the tour before New York City, where Leslie, Russell's ex-wife and current girlfriend, will join them. During a poker game, Russell allows Dick to sell the groupies to Humble Pie for $50 and a case of Heineken. When William tells Penny, she acts nonchalant but is devastated. Penny and Doris are left behind; Dennis has piled the band into a plane for more gigs. Penny goes to New York on her own, showing up as the band gathers in a restaurant with Leslie. As they celebrate making the cover of Rolling Stone, Dick forces Penny to leave as Leslie grows suspicious. William follows Penny back to her hotel to find her overdosed on quaaludes. While keeping her awake he confesses he loves her just before doctors arrive. The following day, Penny reveals her real name (Lady Goodman) to him, a secret she has told very few. Penny thanks William for saving her before returning home to San Diego.

Stillwater's plane is suddenly caught in a thunderstorm and dangerously loses altitude. With death apparently imminent, the group confesses their secrets and jealousies. During a quarrel, Penny is referred to as "that groupie." William defends Penny, reminding the band that they declared they were "in this for the fans," but Penny was their most adoring fan yet they discarded her. However, the plane emerges from the storm unharmed, leaving the band to ponder the changed atmosphere. William continues on to San Francisco to finish the story, parting ways with the band. Russell tells him to write whatever he wants. William submits an article but the Rolling Stone editors dismiss it as a "puff piece." Bangs advises him to be "honest and unmerciful." William rewrites the article, telling the truth. The Rolling Stone editors are eager to publish it until the fact checker reports that Russell has denied everything, making William look like a liar, and the story is dropped. Sitting dejected in the airport, William encounters his sister. Now a stewardess, she offers to take him anywhere; William chooses for them to return home in order for him to make Elaine reconcile with her.

Sapphire talks to Russell about Penny's attempted suicide. She reveals that William saved her life and chastises Russell for denying the truth William reported. Russell calls Penny and asks for her address so they can talk in person; she gives him William's address, and Russell, thinking the address is Penny's, enters the house to find Elaine. Learning who he is, she lets him see William. They reconcile and Russell reveals that he called Rolling Stone to tell them William's story is true. The film ends as Russell finally gives William an interview.

The end shows Stillwater happily back together again, and touring on their bus, while William, Anita, and Elaine are shown at the kitchen table having a pleasant meal together, apparently having gotten over all of the friction from before. Penny is shown at the airport on her way to Morocco like she promised.

Along with the standard DVD version, Crowe compiled an alternate version called Almost Famous: Untitled, which was a compilation of both released footage and his favorite deleted scenes. Running for about 40 minutes longer than the theatrical release, Untitled was subtitled "The Bootleg Cut", with its packaging resembling a cheap seventies bootleg. A variant of Untitled is the basis of the network television version of Almost Famous.[citation needed] The film has been released in Region 2 territories on Blu-ray Disc in its Untitled form—these discs are region-free and will play in all Blu-ray players.[citation needed] The DVD also contains a deleted scene that shows William playing Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven (in its entirety) to his mother. The song itself is not included in the film, but the video has a watermark instructing viewers when to start the song.

Frequency (2000)

Frequency is a 2000 film that contains elements of the time travel, thriller and alternate history film genres. It was directed by Gregory Hoblit and written by Toby Emmerich. The film stars Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel as father and son, Frank and John Sullivan respectively. It was filmed in Toronto and New York City. The film gained mostly favorable reviews following its release via DVD format on October 31, 2000.

The film is set in New York City during October 1999. John Sullivan (Caviezel), a 36 year old homicide Detective, is still traumatized over the death of his fireman father, Frank Sullivan (Quaid), thirty years ago. Living in the same house where he grew up, he discovers his father's ham radio following a breakup with his girlfriend Samantha (Melissa Errico) and begins transmitting.

Because of unusual aurora borealis activity, John discovers he has managed to make contact with his father exactly 30 years in the past the day before his death in a warehouse fire. John is able to warn his father of the fire that would have otherwise taken his life and although Frank initially disbelieves that John is his future son, he heeds John's advice when he realizes that John accurately described the outcome of both Games 1 and 2 of the 1969 Major League Baseball World Series, which had yet to be played when their initial conversation takes place.

In the next conversation, Frank is momentarily occupied and allows 6-year-old John and his best friend Gordo to talk to John on the radio, who, knowing the adult Gordo is into finance and the stock market tells him to remember "a magic word": Yahoo, telling him it's like "Abracadabra".

Having saved his father from the fire, John now creates a new timeline, while paradoxically retaining his memory of the old. The following day, in this new altered timeline, John discovers that Frank had died of lung cancer from chain-smoking and John's mother Julia Sullivan (Elizabeth Mitchell) was murdered by a serial killer. In the old timeline John's mother left her job as a nurse at a hospital to attend to Frank's funeral arrangements, but in the new timeline, she remained at work and was present to save the life of a man who is later revealed to be the "Nightingale Killer", a man who would have died that night from being given a lethal mix of Benazepril and Benadryl had she not been there to correct the error. In the erased timeline, the "Nightingale Killer" had killed only three nurses before his death, with the corpse of one victim not being discovered until 1999. Having been saved from death, he goes on to kill a total of ten women with Julia being sixth.

Using information from 1999 Police files on the impending six killings, John and Frank work together across the gap of time to stop the murderer in 1969 and save Julia. Frank successfully averts the murder of the first expected victim, but when he tries to prevent the next, he is attacked by the killer in a nightclub bathroom and his driver's license is taken from his wallet. When he regains consciousness, Frank rushes to the woman's apartment only to find he is too late.

But all is not lost. John realizes the killer's fingerprints are now on Frank's wallet and John tells his father to seal the wallet in a bag and hide it in the house under a floorboard where it will remain untouched for 30 years. Once Frank accomplishes this, it suddenly appears in 1999 in the same spot. John retrieves it, takes the wallet to the crime lab and learns that the fingerprints belong to a now-retired Detective named Jack Shepard (Shawn Doyle). After learning that Shepard's mother is dead in this new timeline when she was alive in the first timeline, John realizes that she's yet another one of his victims, but no one made the connection as Shepard hid the fact from authorities. However, with his driver's license having been planted at the latest murder scene by the Shepard, Frank becomes a suspect of the murders and is taken in for questioning by his Police Detective friend (and John's later boss), Satch DeLeon (Andre Braugher).

At the station, Frank is confronted by Shepard but electrocutes him and then triggers the fire alarm to escape the station. Later searching for evidence in Shepard's apartment, Frank is caught in the act by Shepard and chased to a stockyard. With Frank's accurate prediction of the outcome of the World Series (specifically, batsman Cleon Jones' "shoe polish" hit incident) provided by John thirty years later, Satch is finally convinced of the truth about Shepard and Frank is cleared of all suspicion after a fight in which Shepard is presumed drowned. However, John knows this cannot be true because his 1999 family photo still shows his mother absent, meaning she was still murdered.

That night, while father and son are talking on the radio, Shepard suddenly breaks into the Sullivan household, both in 1969 and 1999 at the same time and a brutal fight occurs in both time periods in which 36-year-old John is overpowered by Sheppard and 6-year-old John is held hostage. Thanks to Shepard being distracted by the struggle over the radio and an attack from Julia, Frank manages to blow off his hand with a shotgun, causing him to flee. In 1999, Shepard's hand suddenly shrivels and vanishes before his eyes and the inside furnishings of the house suddenly change as well. From the shadows comes Frank, alive and aged and shoots Shepard again, killing him as he attempted to fire back. In this final timeline, Frank neither died in the warehouse fire nor from having lung cancer, upon quitting smoking 30 years earlier at his son's request.

The film concludes with a neighborhood baseball game in 1999. Frank and Julia are there, along with John, the girlfriend who had left him in the original timeline and is now his pregnant wife and his son, Frank. The film shows his best friend Gordo playing outfield and chasing a hit baseball. It smashes into the headlight of Gordo's Mercedes-Benz and we see the personalized license plate that says "1Yahoo", telling the audience that John's single-word advice about Yahoo 30 years earlier has paid off. As John wins the game with a home-run that allows both himself and Frank to score, a montage is shown of John's life with his parents in the new timeline.

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Requiem for a Dream is a cult 2000 drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly. The film is based on Hubert Selby, Jr.'s novel of the same name, with whom Aronofsky wrote the screenplay. Burstyn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. The film was screened out of competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

The film depicts different forms of addiction, leading to the characters’ imprisonment in a world of delusion and reckless desperation that is subsequently overtaken and devastated by reality.

The film charts three seasons in the lives of Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), her son Harry (Jared Leto), Harry’s girlfriend Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly), and Harry’s friend Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans). Each character is ultimately destroyed by addiction and self-delusion.

The story begins in summer; Sara Goldfarb, an elderly widow living alone in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, spends her time watching infomercials on television. After a phone call announces that she will be invited to be a participant on a game show, she becomes obsessed with regaining the youthful appearance she possesses in a photograph from Harry's graduation, her proudest moment. In order to fit into her old red dress, the favorite of her deceased husband Seymour, she begins taking a regimen of prescription weight-loss amphetamine pills throughout the day and a sedative at night. Despite Harry’s warnings about amphetamine addiction, she passionately insists that the chance to be on television has given her a reason to live. When her invitation does not arrive over the fall, she increases her dosage but begins suffering from amphetamine psychosis, hallucinating that she is the principal subject of the game show and that her refrigerator is a menacing, living monster.

Harry is a heroin addict; together with fellow addicts Tyrone and Marion, he enters the illegal drug trade around Coney Island in an attempt to realize their dreams. With the money they make over the summer, Harry and Marion hope to open a fashion store for Marion’s designs, while Tyrone dreams of making his mother proud by escaping the street. However, at the beginning of fall, Tyrone is caught in the middle of a drug gang assassination, and Harry must use most of their money to post bail. Increasing drug-related violence and arrests begin making it hard to obtain drugs, throwing Harry, Tyrone, and Marion into a state of deprivation. Growing more desperate, Harry convinces Marion to have sex with her psychiatrist in exchange for money, causing a rift in the relationship. Meanwhile, Harry’s arm is becoming infected from unsanitary injection techniques.

Sara’s sanity unravels after she visits the television studio in Manhattan. She is put in a mental institution and undergoes unsuccessful medicative treatment, followed by electroconvulsive therapy. Harry and Tyrone set out for Florida to obtain drugs, but Harry’s increasingly infected arm forces them to visit a hospital in South Carolina, where they are arrested for skipping bail. Tyrone must deal with hard labor, racist prison guards and drug withdrawal, as Harry is taken to a prison hospital to have his arm amputated. Harry has a recurring dream of Marion waiting for him at a pier at Coney Island, but awakens and realizes that he is alone in jail with just one arm. Back in New York, Marion meets with a pimp (Keith David), who gives her drugs in exchange for sex and puts her in sex shows to pay for her drug habit.

Lost in misery, each character curls into a fetal position. In Sara’s dream, she wins the game show’s grand prize and meets Harry there. In her fantasy, Harry is a successful businessman and engaged to Marion. Sara and Harry hug and say how much they love one another through the cheers of the crowd and the glowing stage lights.

The Patriot (2000)

The Patriot is a 2000 war film directed by Roland Emmerich, written by Robert Rodat, and starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger. It was produced by the Mutual Film Company and was distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film mainly takes place in South Carolina (and was entirely filmed there) and depicts the story of an American swept into the American Revolutionary War when his family is threatened. The protagonist, Benjamin Martin, is loosely based on real Continental Army officer Francis Marion and other Revolutionary War figures. Mission Impossible 2 (2000)

IMF agent Ethan Hunt has been sent on a mission to retrieve and destroy the supply of a genetically created disease called 'Chimera'. His mission is made impossible due to the fact that he is not the only person after samples of the disease. He must also contest with a gang of international terrorists headed by a turned bad former IMF agent who has already managed to steal the cure called 'Bellerophon' and now need 'Chimera' to complete their grand plan of infecting the whole world. In order to infiltrate and locate the terrorist group he relies on the help of an international thief Nyah of whom he quickly develops a love interest. Time is not only running out for Agent Hunt to find and destroy 'Chimera' before the terrorists get their hands on it, but he must also find 'Bellerophon' so as to save his love interest who has already become infected by the disease from a terrible and rapid death.
