Irreversible (2002)

Irréversible is a 2002 French film written, directed, photographed, and edited by Gaspar Noé. It stars Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel. Several reviewers declared it one of the most disturbing and controversial films of 2002. The film employs non-linear narrative. The music is by French electronic musician Thomas Bangalter, who is best known as half of the band Daft Punk.

Irréversible won the "Bronze Horse" award at the Stockholm Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the "Best Foreign Language Award" by the Film Critics Circle of Australia. It was also voted "Best Foreign Language Film" by the San Diego Film Critics Society (tied with Les Invasions Barbares).

The beginning of the film (that is, the chronological end of the story) features two men talking in a small apartment suite. One of them is the "Butcher", the protagonist of Noé's previous film, I Stand Alone. In a drunken monologue, the Butcher reveals that he was arrested for having sex with his daughter, which happens in I Stand Alone. Their philosophical musings shift to the subject of a commotion in the streets outside, which is derisively attributed to the patrons of a nearby homosexual S&M nightclub called The Rectum.

Minutes earlier, two men named Marcus (Vincent Cassel) and Pierre (Albert Dupontel) are escorted out of that nightclub by the police. Marcus is on a stretcher, apparently injured, and Pierre is in handcuffs. Men on the streets shout homophobic insults at them. Earlier that evening, Marcus and Pierre arrived at the club in a frantic search for somebody nicknamed le Tenia — "the Tapeworm". Marcus finds the man believed to be le Tenia and attacks him. The man pins Marcus down, then breaks his arm and attempts to rape him. Pierre rescues Marcus by bludgeoning the attacker's face using a fire extinguisher, fatally crushing the man's skull after repeated blows. During the onslaught, the real le Tenia (Jo Prestia) is seen to be amused by the situation.

Before entering the club, it is learned that Marcus and Pierre went in search of le Tenia after questioning several prostitutes. Apparently their goal is retribution for someone's rape. They track down a transsexual prostitute named Concha (Jara-Millo) who identifies the rapist as le Tenia after Marcus threatens to slash her with a piece of broken glass. Concha also reveals that the rapist is likely to be found at a nightclub called The Rectum.

Marcus and Pierre were aided in their search by a street thug named Mourad (Mourad Khimaand) and his friend Layde (Hellal). Mourad promised to help them find le Tenia for money so that Marcus could have his revenge, rather than leave the matter to the police. It is revealed that le Tenia anally raped Marcus's girlfriend Alex (Monica Bellucci), and beat her so severely that she fell into a coma.

The rape takes place after Alex encounters le Tenia beating Concha in a pedestrian underpass. Le Tenia then turns his attention on Alex and threatens her with a knife to her throat. He then proceeds to rape Alex, pinning her down on her stomach and threatening her. After raping Alex, le Tenia brutally beats her. From this scene, it becomes clear that Pierre and Marcus attack the wrong man later in the story (earlier in the film). Le Tenia was in fact standing right next to the man Pierre killed in Club Rectum.

In the next scene, we see Alex, Marcus, and Pierre at a party. Alex is annoyed by Marcus' unrestrained use of drugs and alcohol and his flirtatious behavior with other women, and consequently decides to leave the party. The next scene shows the trio discussing sex in a metro station and in the train. It is revealed Pierre used to be Alex's lover.

The penultimate scene shows Marcus and Alex lying in bed after sex. Alex reveals she might be pregnant, and Marcus is pleased with the possibility. To prepare for the party, Marcus leaves to buy wine and Alex has a shower. Alone, Alex uses a home pregnancy test that confirms she is now carrying a child, for which she is elated. She is shown sitting on the bed clothed, with her hand on her belly: a poster for Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the tagline "The Ultimate Trip", is above the headboard.

The final colorful scene shows Alex reading An Experiment with Time by John William Dunne in a park, surrounded by playing children. Beethoven's 7th Symphony is heard in the background. The camera spins around faster and faster until it blacks out into a strobe effect, accompanied by a pulsing, roaring sound. A rapidly-spinning image of a water spray can be dimly perceived.

The final title card reads: LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT ("Time Destroys Everything") — a phrase uttered in the film's first scene by one of the men in the apartment.

Inception is a 2010 science fiction action film written, co-produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film features an ensemble cast starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Dileep Rao, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine. DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb, a specialized corporate spy and thief. His work consists of secretly extracting valuable commercial information from the unconscious minds of his targets while they are asleep and dreaming. Wanted for murder and unable to visit his children, Cobb is offered a chance to regain his old life as payment for a task considered to be impossible: "inception", the planting of an idea into a target's subconscious.

Development began roughly nine years before Inception was released. In 2001, Nolan wrote an 80-page treatment about dream-stealers, presenting the idea to Warner Bros. The story was originally envisioned as a horror film inspired by concepts of lucid dreaming and dream incubation. Feeling he needed to have more experience with large-scale films, Nolan opted to work on Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight. He spent six months polishing up the script for Inception before Warner Bros. purchased it in February 2009. Filming spanned six countries and four continents, beginning in Tokyo on June 19, 2009, and finishing in Canada in late November of the same year.

Inception was officially budgeted at $160 million, a cost that was split between Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.[3] Nolan's reputation and success with The Dark Knight helped secure the film's $100 million in advertising expenditure,[3] with most of the publicity involving viral marketing. Inception premiered in London on July 8, 2010, and was released in both conventional and IMAX theaters on July 16, 2010.[9][10] A box office success, Inception has grossed over $800 million worldwide and is currently one of the highest-grossing films of all time.[4] The home video market also had strong results, with $68 million in DVD sales.

Inception received wide critical acclaim, with numerous critics praising it for its originality, cast, score, and visual effects.[11] The film received eight Academy Award nominations and nine British Academy Film Award nominations and won four times: Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Cinematography. It also won no artistic categories, while winning most of the stagecraft awards for which it was nominated. At awards ceremonies focusing on artistic categories such as Golden Globes, the film met with little success.

Indecent Proposal (1993)

Indecent Proposal is a 1993 drama film, based on the novel of the same name by Jack Engelhard. It was directed by Adrian Lyne and stars Robert Redford, Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson.

Childhood sweethearts David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) are a married couple who travel to Las Vegas, hoping they can win enough money to finance David's fantasy real estate project. They place their money on red in roulette and lose. After gambling away all of their savings, they encounter billionaire John Gage (Robert Redford). Gage is attracted to Diana and offers David one million dollars to spend a night with her. After a difficult night, David and Diana decide to accept the offer, and a contract is signed the next day. Gage flies Diana to a private yacht, and their arrangement is consummated.

Although he had hoped to forget the whole incident, David grows increasingly insecure about his relationship with Diana, consumed with a fear that she remains involved with Gage; this insecurity is heightened by the fact Diana discovers that Gage has bought their home/property while it was going into foreclosure. Because of this tension on their relationship, David and Diana separate. Gage actively persists and renews his advances on Diana. Although she initially resists, Diana eventually consents to spending time with him, and a relationship develops. David, meanwhile, realizes he cannot go on without the love of his life. When Diana files for divorce, David makes one final attempt to win her back by signing the divorce papers and giving the million dollars away. David bares his soul as to why he allowed the night to happen. It is clearly a turning point for both of them.

Gage sees how Diana looks at David and recognizes that, even if she stayed with him, their relationship would never achieve the intensity she had with David. Later in the car with Gage, it is clear Diana has made up her mind to return to David when she says to Gage that they need to talk. Gage, realizing that she longs to return to David, makes up a story that she was only the latest in a long line of "million dollar girls". Diana realizes that Gage is doing this to make it easy for her to leave, thanks Gage and returns to David. Before returning he gives her his lucky coin. On the yacht, he had offered to take her back to David and forgo their deal if she called the coin toss. Gage had won the toss. The lucky coin is revealed to be double sided. She returns to the pier where David proposed, only to find him there waiting. They confess their love for one another, join hands and the film ends.

I Spit on Your Grave is a 2010 American rape and revenge horror film, and a remake of the controversial 1978 cult film of the same name.[4] It was directed by Steven R. Monroe,[5] and stars Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Rodney Eastman, Jeff Branson, and Andrew Howard.

The film opens with young novelist Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) driving to a shop to pick up the keys to a cabin she has rented for a few months and to get directions. She is going to the cabin in the woods down south to write her second novel. On her way to the cabin, she gets lost and pulls into a gas station where she encounters a group of grease heads. She accidentally spills some fluid on the head of the group, Johnny (Jeff Branson), and hits the panic button on her car, scaring him and causing him to spill gasoline all over himself. The other guys make fun of him for getting scared. Jennifer drives off into the gravelly road to the cabin. A few days pass and something strange happens. One night, she begins to hear noises every so often that make her uneasy. Her first visitor is Matthew (Chad Lindberg), who is sent to the cabin to fix the broken toilet. His reward is a kiss from Jennifer, and the shy Matthew runs out of the cabin. He later meets up with the group and tells them "she likes me", and the guys begin to talk about Jennifer whom they refer to as "the girl from the City" or "the girl".

Nightfall comes and Jennifer begins to hear noises around the house. She checks and finds nothing; her fears are realized when the gang from the gas station come to the cabin to get Matthew to lose his virginity. After they mess with her, making her perform fellatio on bottles and a gun, she is able to escape the cabin and runs off into the woods. She bumps into Storch (Andrew Howard), the sheriff, and Earl (Tracey Walter), the person from whom she rented the cabin. Storch brings Jennifer back to the cabin acting like he is going to help her. He finds wine and a marijuana joint and begins to interrogate her. After an improper pat down, the boys come through the door and she realizes that they are in cahoots. They hold her down, so Matthew can rape her. After he is done, she just gets up and walks out butt naked outside of the cabin and into the woods. She is confronted by the gang again. Andy holds her head underwater and Storch anally rapes her and they each have a turn raping her, Stanley recording the entire event on his videocamera the whole time. After all five men are done with her, she gets up again and walks out of the woods and onto a bridge. Just when Storch is going to shoot her, Jennifer jumps into the river. The gang searches for her body but have no luck finding her and begin to get rid of any evidence left behind.

A month passes before Jennifer returns. She has survived in the woods for a month eating, as she explains later, bugs and other things and has been staying in a run-down house in the woods. She starts playing games with the group who all think Matthew has lost it. To keep Earl quiet about Jennifer's visit, Storch kills him while hunting. Jennifer's first victim is Matthew, the slower of the bunch who has a crush on her and is the only one that feels remorse. Jennifer, however, does not care and drags him away with a noose around his neck. Her second and third victims are the group's two lackeys. Stanley (Daniel Franzese), the fat one, steps in a bear trap, and Andy (Rodney Eastman) gets knocked out with a baseball bat. Jennifer uses fish hooks to keep Stanley's eyes open while she pulls out a fish and guts it, and spreads the guts in his eyes and face. This is all being recorded on his camera; the same camera he used to film her being raped. The fish guts attracts crows, who begin to peck on his face and eventually his eyeballs. Andy is tied up lying on a few boards over a bath tub being filled with water. Jennifer throws in some lye and removes one of the boards, forcing him to use his strength to stay out of the base. Eventually his face hits the base-filled bath tub. Each time he pulls himself up we see his base-burned face, with his tongue dissolved. Johnny is later strung up naked with a bridle in his mouth. Jennifer begins to pull out his teeth one by one with pliers, then takes out his own pistol and forces him to perform fellatio on it, the same as he did to her, and then finally she pulls out hedge clippers and cuts off his penis and sticks it in his mouth, leaving him to bleed to death.

After Jennifer is done with Johnny, she goes to visit the sheriff's family. Pretending to be his daughter's school teacher, she talks to him on the phone. Storch races home to find Jennifer is no longer there. He finds out she has taken his daughter to the playground. Storch races there to find no one, except Jennifer in the back seat of his cop car. After the sheriff wakes up from the blow from the baton, Jennifer begins to rape Storch anally with a shotgun. She has also attached a string to the trigger and the other end has been tied around Matthew's wrist. She walks out of the house with Storch begging for mercy and cursing her out at the same time. Then Matthew wakes up and in a failed attempt by Storch to calm Matthew down, Matthew moves, firing the shotgun, killing both Storch and Matthew. Jennifer is then seen sitting in a tree with a smirk on her face.

I Am Number Four 2011

I Am Number Four is a young adult science fiction novel by Pittacus Lore (a pseudonym for James Frey and Jobie Hughes). The book was published by HarperCollins on August 3, 2010, and spent 7 straight weeks at #1 on the children's chapter of The New York Times Best Seller list.

Touchstone Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures bought the rights to the film in June 2009; it was released on February 18, 2011. The novel is the first of a proposed six-book series.

I Am Number Four follows the story of John Smith, a 15-year old alien from the planet Lorien, and his guardian, Henri, as they run from the Mogadorians, another race of aliens that are hunting down John and the eight other teenage Loriens, who all make up the Garde, living on Earth. The Garde consists of all Loriens who have special Legacies and powers. The teenagers are protected by a charm, which only allows them to be killed in a set order. John is Number Four. Only the Loriens have a human appearance.

The book opens with the death of Number Three. Number Four is introduced, going by the name of Daniel Jones, as he leaves Florida. Four has three circular scars wrapped around his right ankle, signifying the deaths of Numbers One, Two and Three. These scars are present on all the Lorien teenagers, and with each death, another scar appears. Henri, Four's Cêpan (guardian), tells him they are going to Paradise, Ohio. Four is given the name John Smith as his new alias.

Tired of running, John says that he wants to begin to make a life for himself. Henri reminds him why they run, and the conversation ends. John begins to attend the local high school, where he meets Sarah Hart, a blonde junior. He also meets her ex-boyfriend Mark James, who immediately begins to pick on John. John stands up to him, the first time he has ever stood up to anybody.

In his astronomy class, John's hands begin to hurt and glow. When John is back at his house, he realizes that his first Legacy has arrived. A Legacy is a power that only certain Loriens possess, and each differs from one Lorien to the other, except for telekinesis, which all members of the Garde are capable of performing. Henri tells John that his first Legacy is Lumen, the ability to produce light from his hands and a resistance to heat and fire. When Henri begins to help, the resistance of fire and heat spread throughout John's body, John has a vision of his last moments on Lorien when the Mogadorians attacked, while Henri narrates.

Henri and John have a special Lorien chest that can only be opened by John and Henri together. The only way that John can open the chest without Henri is if he dies. Henri shows John a model of the galaxies, where he can see how Lorien looked before the Mogadorians destroyed it and how it looks now, desolate and barren. The chest also has a healing stone that heals all wounds inflicted on the body, but in order to heal the wound, the injured person must endure pain twice as intense as the first time and the wound must have come from the intent to hurt or kill a Lorien. The healing stone must also be used soon after the wound is inflicted. A third item in the chest is small pebble-like rocks(Lorien salt) that John and Henri put under their tongue to reduce pain. But that immediately diminishes if a Lorien uses one of their legacies.

After his first Legacy arrives, John begins to train in combat. John can eventually turn his lights on and off by will. John also makes his first real friend, Sam Goode, who believes in aliens. He also grows closer to Sarah. At a town Halloween party, John, Sarah, Sam, and Sarah's friend, Emily, are ambushed by Mark and his football teammates. John, who is enraged by Mark's constant bullying and the fact that he has kidnapped Sarah, finds, confronts, and defeats him. Sam sees John's lights and begins to avoid him.

John confronts Sam, and Sam turns a gun on him, asking who he really is, but John convinces him that he isn't an alien. At a Thanksgiving dinner, John is worried when Henri doesn't turn up at the Hart's place after going in search of the publishers of Sam's alien conspiracy magazine. John calls Sam for help, and the two go to Athens, Ohio, where they find Henri. John's telekinesis Legacy appears, and he uses it to save both Henri and Sam. Sam is told the truth about both John and Henri after seeing John use his telekinesis, and accepts them for who they are. John's training begins to intensify, by being set on fire and using his telekinesis.

At a party at Mark's house, a fire starts, trapping Sarah on the second floor. John rushes in and saves her, revealing who and what he really is to her in the process. She confesses her love for him however, and John says he loves her, too. He tells her everything about himself. At school the next day, John fears that he will have to leave, as people had seen him jump out of the window and reported it. However, the paper has no reference to John, but a fax sent to the school saying "Are you Number Four?" causes John to flee the school in panic through a window. When he arrives home, he sees Mark, who has realized what John is. He also has an argument with Henri about why he did what he did, saying he wanted a normal life. He returns to the school to find Sarah after realizing the Mogadorians are on their way to kill him.

John finds her, but is found by a Mogadorian scout, one of several who have closed in on the school. John kills it, and while trying to flee the school is found by Henri and Mark. The four are found by a girl around John's age, and John's dog, Bernie Kosar. The girl says that she is Number Six. John realizes that with Six with him, the charm protecting them from being killed out of order has now broken. Six replies that the war has begun, with Henri agreeing. As the five companions find a way out of the school, John tells Mark and Sarah to go back and hide, as it isn't their fight. They leave, and John confronts his first soldier, whom he kills.

John is wounded severely and is rescued by Henri and Sam, who realized what was happening and came to help. John discovers his third Legacy, the ability to communicate with animals, and convinces one of the Mogadorians' beasts to turn on its masters. Henri is hit by an energy blast from a soldier and dies in John's arms. Before he passes away, he says, "Coming here, to Paradise, it wasn't by chance."

After waking up in a hotel room, John tells Sarah he has to leave. Sarah accepts this and tells him she will wait for him. John replies in a similar fashion, saying his heart will always belong to her. Afterward, Henri's body is cremated. Sam agrees to go with John and Six as they prepare to leave in search of the other four Loriens. The novel ends with John telling Sarah he will come back to her as he leaves.

Into Eternity 2010

Into Eternity is a feature documentary film directed by Danish director Michael Madsen, released in 2010. It follows the digging and pre-implementation of the Onkalo nuclear waste repository on the island of Olkiluoto, Finland. Director Michael Madsen questions Onkalo's intended eternal existence, addressing an audience in the remote future.

Into Eternity raises the question of the authorities' responsibility of ensuring compliance with relatively new safety criteria legislation and the principles at the core of nuclear waste management.

When shown on the British More4 digital television channel on 26 April 2011, the name Nuclear Eternity was used.

Infestation (2009)

Infestation is a 2009 comedy/horror/drama feature film by American writer/director Kyle Rankin. Produced by Mel Gibson's Icon Entertainment and starring Chris Marquette. It was filmed in Bulgaria.

An underachiever named Cooper awakes to find himself nauseous, weak and covered in webbing in the office where he works as an office clerk. As Cooper struggles out of the building, he comes face to face with a grotesque, powerful, angry bug — the first in an infestation of monstrous proportions.
As Cooper discovers what is happening, he befriends a ragtag group of survivors including Sara, a feisty and attractive female, a smart Asian, a dumb blond and a strong black man. Although the situation is dire, Cooper cannot help trying to solve his dating problems while also saving his life.
The film ends with Cooper and his fellow survivors turning toward the sound of a large rumbling. The source of this rumbling is not specified as the film then turns to black in a cliffhanger.

The rumbling is suggested to be either the insects returning or Army tanks finally arriving to attack the alien infestation.
