The film won a number of awards, including the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic Film at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. It was nominated for four 2011 Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.

17-year-old Ree Dolly cares for her mother, who no longer speaks after a suffering a breakdown, and her two younger siblings Sonny and Ashlee. They are struggling and only get by with charity from the neighbours, which honour dictates they can't ask for. Ree dreams of joining the army and leaving and has started teaching Sonny and Ashlee to fend for themselves by training them to cook and to hunt squirrels.

Their father, Jessup, who is facing charges for cooking meth, is missing and hasn't been seen for a long time. The sheriff tells Ree that if he doesn't turn up to court they will lose the house because it was put up as part of his bond. Ree sets out to try and find her father and follows his trail into a world where meth use is common, violence frequent, women are scared of their men and people are bound by a codes of loyalty and secrecy. She starts with her uncle Teardrop, a meth addict, and continues onto more distant kin eventually trying to talk to the local crime boss Thump Milton. Thump refuses to even be seen by her and all she has gotten are warnings to leave it alone and stories that Jessup died in a meth lab fire or skipped town to avoid the trial. Jessup's mistress tells her that she saw Jessup a few weeks ago with some strangers but that he pretended he didn't even know her.

When Jessup fails to show for the trial, the bondsman comes looking for him and tells Ree that she will have about week before the house is seized. Ree tells hims that Jessup is in a shallow grave or lying in the woods somewhere because Dollys don't run. He tells her she will need proof he is dead and didn't abscond in order to avoid the bond being forfeit. Ree again tries to see Thump and is given a severe beating by his women since it would be improper for a man to hurt her. Teardrop turns up and rescues her, promising that she won't say anything or cause any more trouble. Teardrop tells Ree that her father was killed because he was going to inform in order to avoid going to prison, but that it is safer if he doesn't know who killed his younger brother.

The neighbours would like to take Sonny and raise him but not Ashlee so Ree considers asking Teardrop and his wife to take her in. She discovers that joining the army is no solution, the sign-up bonus may not arrive for over a year, she couldn't take her brother and sister with her and since she is under 18 she would need her parents signatures. The recruitment officer tells her that the tougher and more honourable thing to do would be to stay and ensure her siblings are raised properly.

Teardrop decides to stir things up by confronting Thump's men and smashing their windscreen. When the sheriff pulls them over Teardrop accuses him of tipping of Thump that Jessup was going to inform and then forces the sheriff to hostler his gun and back down by showing a rifle. Teardrop and Ree search but fail to find the body. Thump's women go and see Ree, who is learning how to operate in this world and this time confronts them with a gun. They say that to avoid further trouble and questions they will take Ree blindfolded to her father's body and allow her to cut off his hands for proof that he is dead. Ree takes the hands to the sheriff telling him someone flung them on the porch and stands up to him refusing to co-operate and letting him know which side she is on.

Teardrop brings two chicks for Sonny and Ashlee to raise. The bondsman turns up and returns the cash portion of the bond, which was put up by an anonymous associate of Jessup, to Ree. Ree tries to give the money back to Teardrop but he tells her to keep it and he now knows who killed her father. Ree reassures Sonny and Ashlee that she won't ever leave them.
